When surgery is needed

Replacement is considered when the cartilage is worn through on X-ray and pain is limiting sleep, walking and daily life despite medication, weight management and physiotherapy. In younger patients with deformity, a joint-preserving osteotomy is often the better first operation.

What the procedure involves

A CT or X-ray based 3D plan is built from your own anatomy. In theatre, computer navigation or a robotic arm keeps the bone cuts and implant position inside that plan. The worn surfaces are replaced with metal and high-grade polyethylene, and the leg is balanced before closing.

Cost and insurance

Cost varies with the implant, whether one or both joints are done, and the hospital category. Robotic and computer-assisted planning carries a premium over conventional replacement. A written estimate including implant, stay and physiotherapy is shared before scheduling, and cashless insurance is accepted.

Questions patients ask

How long does a robotic knee replacement last?
Modern implants placed with accurate alignment last well beyond fifteen years in the large majority of patients. Weight control and staying active protect the result.
How soon will I walk after knee replacement surgery?
You stand on the day of surgery and walk with support within twenty-four hours. Stairs come at around week two and most patients are walking unaided between three and six weeks.
What does the robot actually do?
It does not operate on its own. A 3D plan is built from your scan, and the robotic arm keeps the bone cuts and implant position inside that plan to within a fraction of a millimetre.
Am I too young for a joint replacement?
Sometimes. In younger patients with deformity, an osteotomy that realigns and preserves your own joint may be the better operation. That assessment is made from your examination and imaging.
How long is the hospital stay?
Typically two to three nights for a single joint, with a home physiotherapy plan and a review at two weeks.
