Arthroscopy & Sports Injuries

Keyhole surgery for the knee, shoulder and ankle, with return-to-sport protocols built around your sport.

Conditions treated

  • ACL and PCL tears
  • Meniscus and cartilage injury
  • Rotator cuff tears and shoulder instability
  • Recurrent ankle sprains

Symptoms to watch for

  • Knee giving way or locking when you twist or pivot
  • Swelling that returns after sport or a long day on your feet
  • Shoulder pain at night and weakness lifting overhead
  • An ankle that keeps rolling on uneven ground
  • Clicking or catching with a sense that something is stuck

Recovery

General arthroscopy recovery: jogging at around one month, specific drills and competitive pivoting sport between two and three months. ACL reconstruction is the exception — that follows a longer nine to twelve month return-to-sport timeline.

When surgery is needed

Keyhole surgery is advised when the joint is mechanically unstable or blocked — a knee that gives way, a bucket-handle meniscus tear, a full-thickness rotator cuff tear, or recurrent dislocation. Pain alone, without instability or a structural tear on MRI, is treated first with a supervised strengthening programme.

What the procedure involves

Two or three keyhole incisions of about a centimetre each. A camera shows the inside of the joint on screen, the damaged tissue is repaired or trimmed, and torn ligaments are reconstructed with a graft. Most cases take 45 to 90 minutes and are day-care or one-night stays.

Cost and insurance

Cost depends on the joint, whether a repair or a reconstruction is needed, and the implants used. Insurance and TPA cashless claims are accepted at the operating hospital and the estimate is given in writing before you commit to a date.

Questions patients ask

How long is recovery after arthroscopic knee surgery?
Most patients walk the same day, drive at around two weeks and jog at about one month. Sport-specific drills start between two and three months. ACL reconstruction is the exception and follows a nine to twelve month return-to-sport plan.
Does every ACL tear need surgery?
No. A partial tear in someone who does not play pivoting sport can often be managed with a supervised strengthening programme. Reconstruction is advised when the knee gives way, when other structures such as the meniscus are torn, or when you want to return to pivoting sport.
Is arthroscopy done under general anaesthesia?
Knee and ankle arthroscopy is usually done under spinal or regional anaesthesia, shoulder arthroscopy under general anaesthesia with a nerve block. The choice is made with the anaesthetist after your pre-operative assessment.
How soon can I return to the gym after a shoulder arthroscopy?
Light lower-body and cardio work restarts at around three weeks. Loaded pressing and overhead work is held back until roughly four months after a rotator cuff repair, guided by your physiotherapy milestones.
Will I need physiotherapy after keyhole surgery?
Yes. The surgery restores the anatomy; physiotherapy restores the function. You leave with a written protocol and review appointments so progress is measured, not guessed.
